Where lush scenery and pristine beaches meet the traditional and contemporary sides of Greece.
Corfu is probably the best known of
the seven Ionian Islands that lie off the north-west coast of Greece. It
differs markedly from the other popular Greek islands because it is green and
lush and very developed with tourist resorts and hotels. Therefore it is not
surprising that the summer time is hectic.
It has a lot to offer. Modern Corfu
Town is upbeat and cosmopolitan whilst the old town features narrow alleys
lined with multi-storeyed pastel-coloured buildings with red tiled roofs.
The hub of activity in the town
centre is the Liston, an arcaded row of cafes and restaurants, copied from the
Rue de Rivoli in Paris. But if you want to escape the hustle and bustle you can
always take in the spectacular scenery and greenery with its wild orchids, countless
olive groves and stunning beaches and Ionian Sea. Inland, a network of twisting
roads service local villages that appear untouched by tourism so you can get a
true flavour of Corfu.
The island boasts a rich history,
both from Greek mythology, with its connections to Poseidon, God of the Sea, and Homer’s Odyssey, and from its history
of upheaval and conquest due to its strategic position. The legacy of the
latter can be seen in the form of two castles that protected the city of Corfu.
The centre of Corfu is dominated by Mount
Pantocrator. The North East coast is made up of sheltered rocky coves and
shingle beaches offering secluded bays and traditional fishing villages. But
the main commercial area is to the North and South with its long sweeping sandy
bays including resorts such as Paleokastritsa, Kavos and Sidari.
As
Corfu is the most northern of the Greek Islands it has a unique climate. It is characterized
by a mild winter and a high level of rainfall, especially during winter. During
the summer Corfu is cooler than in other parts of Greece
with temperatures never exceeding 39°C.
The monthly
average temperatures are:

Corfu's marketplace mirrors its history
and atmosphere that will transport you back to the 17th and 18th centuries. For
years people from all over the world have make Corfu their home creating a
wealth of businesses not seen in other areas of Greece.
In the centre of the Old Corfu town craftsmen
produce a huge variety of objects, including popular art, gold and silver
jewellery, and pottery. Pottery workshops can be found all over the island, the
Pottery Workshop, 15km (10
miles) north of Corfu on the right of the road to Paleokastritsa is
particularly special as you can watch the making and decorating of the pottery
on sale there.
Handcrafted olivewood products are a
natural consequence of the millions of olive trees on the island. Another
favourite is the Kumquat liqueur and Kumquat preserve. Both of these products
can be found almost everywhere on Corfu island.
Traditional soap is another local
product that is well worth purchasing during your shopping trip. Both the green
and white types of soap are made from by products of the olive oil pressing
process making it a pure and natural product. The soap producers PATOUNI still
produce this traditional product and they have a shop in Sanrocco Square.
Corfu town has something for
everyone. If you want something gentle like a long dinner and walk you could
try one of the many cafes such as Liston, Europa or Aegli or the rooftop
café/bar at the Cavalieri Hotel. However one of the best kept secrets is the
Art Café behind the Museum of Asian Art, its garden offers a quiet retreat from
the bustle of the town.
There are several nightspots along
the coast between Corfu Town and Gouvia, like Ekati, Esperidesm, and Corfu by
Night that often attracts young crowds during night time for a livelier evening.
If you want even more excitement then there are some discos past the New Port –
Apokalypsis, Hippodrome and DNA.
If having a
flutter is more your thing, there's a well-known casino at the Corfu Holiday
Palace a few miles outside of town.
After sampling the delights
of Corfu Town and nearby beaches, you may want to look further a field. Here
are a few of the excursions that you can indulge in:
The tourists should take care
of their belongings while they are travelling. Taxi drivers sometime scam
foreign tourist by charging an extra fare so make sure you ask to see the distance
and rate card form the driver before making payment.
Although the tap water is
drunk by locals it has a high mineral content so visitors are advised to buy
bottled water instead. However, brushing your teeth with the tap water
shouldn’t cause you any problems.
Always ensure you wear a high
factor sun cream and, if possible, stay out of the sun between noon and 3pm,
especially in the summer. Additionally, make sure you drink plenty of water to
avoid dehydration, especially if taking part in any physical activity.
