Egypt welcomes you with its mighty Nile and magnificent monuments, the beguiling desert and lush delta, and with its long past and welcoming, story-loving people.
When you think of
Egypt, you immediately think of Pharaohs, pyramids, the Valley of the Kings, temples
and antiquities from ancient civilisations. It is a country steeped in history,
wonder and mystery.
It is the oldest
travel destination on earth. Even back in Greek and Roman time’s travellers
flocked to the banks of the Nile to wonder at the amazing sights that have
ensured its popularity as a holiday destination continues to the present day.
That coupled with the year-round sunshine, warm hospitality and value for money
and its close proximity to Europe continues to make it one of the most visit
countries on earth.
Without doubt, the
temples, relics, Sphinx and pyramids of Giza are the country’s biggest
attractions. Travellers marvel at the treasurers that have been rescued from
the pyramids and exhibited in Cairo’s spectacular Museum of Antiquities.
At its centre lies
the Nile Rive. Today feluccas (traditional dhows) offer short pleasure trips
from Cairo while cruise ships travel between Luxor and Aswan.
Egypt is a country
of desert landscape and dry rugged mountains that reach to the sea. Cities full
of exotic sounds and smells, and green strips of agricultural land snaking
along the banks of the Nile mean that Egypt has something to offer all
travellers from all walks of life.
From spectacular
diving in the Red Sea at Sharm El Sheikh and Hurgada, relaxing beach holidays in Taba
and Marsa Alam, unique desert experiences, Mount Sinai, jeep
safaris to the inner oases, the colour and chaos of Cairo and its markets, and
felucca cruises on the Nile River there is sure to be something for every one.
The
official currency is the Egyptian pound (E£). There is a severe shortage of small change in
Egypt so as a good rule of thumb make sure you hoard small change wherever
possible. Also, be sure to cash out large bills in upscale establishments.
Many
hotels will only accept payment in American dollars or euros. ATMs are becoming
more and more widespread. Tourist-friendly cities such as Cairo, Alexandria,
Luxor, Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurgada have many cash dispensers. The vast majority
are compatible with Visa, MasterCard and any Cirrus or Plus cards. ATMs at
Banque Misr, CIB, Egyptian American Bank (EAB), National Bank of Egypt and HSBC
are particularly reliable.
