Side (pronounced See-deh)
is on Turkey’s southern Mediterranean coast about 34 miles from Antalya. It lies along a small peninsular and is almost
surrounded by golden sandy beaches.
In ancient times, Side began life as a harbour
renowned for its slavery and piracy. However that was a long time ago and today
it is an intoxicating mixture of ancient and modern. Amongst the many ancient
wonders in Side are the Roman baths, amphitheatre and temples.
There are a number of upmarket hotels set on the
edge of the immaculate beaches many of which have their own private beaches.
In peak season, Side is awash with a young and
lively crowd. Although the beaches are large they can still become crowded
during peak season however there are also nearby beaches at Sorgun, Kumoy and
Colakli. The clear azure waters provide a visually stunning contrast to the
beaches and also a playground for the more adventurous who enjoy water sports.
The narrow streets of the Old Town are ideal to
explore. You will encounter numerous ancient sites as you wander making it easy
to get lost amongst the history around you.
Located on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast line, Side
enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers.
The average monthly temperatures are:

Side has numerous shops packed in between the clubs
and bars. There is quite a good selection of items especially carpets,
jewellery and leather shops. There is also a market every Saturday.
For a larger number of shops you should head to the
nearby larger town of Manavgat. Here you will also find an excellent market on
Mondays (and Thursdays).
If both of these fail to satisfy your cravings for
retail therapy, you always head for the large jewellery and carpet
‘supermarkets’ near Perge and Aspendos or to the designer shop heaven of Antalya.
There is one thing that you must do when staying in
Side and that is enjoy a drink whilst marvelling at the stunning sunset by the
Temple of Apollo.
The Old Town is full of clubs and bars in which to
spend your evenings (and early mornings). Bar Street is the location for the
main concentration of these. Here are a few names to look out for.
