Bodrum is one of Turkey’s most popular
resorts on the Aegean coast. Its narrow
streets wind their way down to the sea, and the peaceful setting of its twin
harbours offer shelter for yachts.
It is dominated by the 15th-century
Castle of St Peter which today houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. It
is also home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Mausoleum of
Halicarnassus.
Even though Bodrum is Turkey's leading
resort destination, it remains unspoilt and retains its charming Turkish
character. Full of exotic bazaars, the wailing cry of the muezzin and ancient
history, you are sure to experience the true Turkey.
It is particularly popular with British tourists and despite its
seaside position it is not a beach resort. A dolmuş (minibus) service
goes to the nearby sand-and-shingle beaches at Gumbet, 3km and Bitez,
7km away.
As with many
resorts in this area, Bodrum enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with mild
winters and hot summers. Rainfall is unlikely in the summer months, but the
rainfall is quite high in winter.
The average
monthly temperatures are:

Bodrum has
countless narrow streets lined with shops to keep even the most ardent of
shoppers happy. You will find shops selling everything from carpets, leather ware,
gold and silver jewellery, to designer clothing (although a lot of this will be
fake).
If you enjoy submerging
yourself in local markets you will enjoy Bodrum’s Tuesday craft market and the fruit
and vegetable market on Fridays. Of course, this is Turkey so bargaining is
expected and it is customary to haggle down to about half the asking price.
If you like
all your shopping under one roof, try the Oasis Shopping and Cultural Center
which has more than 200 shops.
When the sun
goes down, Bodrum is Turkey’s busiest town outside Istanbul.
If you are
looking for bars and clubs head for ‘Bar Street’ (Dr Alim Bey
Caddesi/Cumhuriyet Caddesi) which stretches along the seafront. It is home to the
biggest open air night club in Europe – Halikarnass Night Club. If you prefer
something a bit quieter why not find a meyhanes
which is a local restaurant/bar with traditional music and dancing.
The resort is
also home to a couple of casinos, so if gambling is more your thing head for
Club M Hotel and Bodrum Casino or the Karia Princess Casino.
