Belek is on
Turkey’s south coast, 35km east of Antalya. The resort
stretches along a flat coastal plain, with the backdrop of the Taurus Mountains
a few kilometres inland.
It is a sprawling resort town that has
been specifically developed for tourism, and has grown to encompass the
neighbouring village of Kadriye. The area is a haven for people looking for
luxury, golf and relaxing on the beach.
Belek is, however, close to a number of
interesting sites such as the ruins of the Roman town of Perge and the
well-preserved ancient amphitheatre at Aspendos.
Belek enjoys
a stunning white sand beach that stretches for 16 km fringed by pine trees and
lapped by turquoise waters. Perfect for children and sun worshipers, it is also
a popular nesting place for loggerhead and green turtles. The beach is public
but treated as private by the hotels that line it with most offering a range of
water sports from pedalos to dinghy sailing and parasailing.
As with many
resorts in this area, Belek enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with mild
winters and hot summers. Rainfall is unlikely in the summer months, but the
rainfall is quite high in winter.
The average
monthly temperatures are:

Considering
the nature of the resort, shopping in Belek is expensive and high end. The town
itself does have some shops and malls but most of the large hotels have their
own shopping arcades.
If you want
to get away from the resort and experience some ‘proper’ shopping, head for Kadriye,
Perge, Aspendos, Kaleiçi or the old town of Antalya.
The town of
Belek does have a lively street market if you want to experience some shopping
with the locals. There is also a huge bazaar every Saturday where shoppers can
haggle to their heart's content.
The vast majority of the entertainment
in Belek is provided by the large hotels. Most of them provide anything from lounge
pianists to nightclubs, cabarets and discos.
Relatively few people leave the confines of their hotel and there is very little on offer elsewhere.
If you want something a bit more
colourful, why not visit neighbouring Antalya.
You are advised not to drink the tap
water in Belek, instead use bottled water. Belek is a very safe resort however
you are advised to extend the usual precautions with your valuables.
