Travel to an island where grand palaces and mighty castles rise above ancient ruins, golden beaches and sapphire seas.
Rhodes has long been
associated with being the party island. It’s big, brash and bold and receives
by far the lion’s share of visitors to this island group. It combines all that
is needed in a holiday island: beaches, nightlife, culture, scenery, greenery
and comfort.
The island lies in the south-eastern
Aegean, close to the coast of
Turkey. The city of Rhodes is one of the biggest municipalities of
all the Greek islands with a population of 60,000.
It is the cultural and financial centre of
the area and mixes a rich historical past with a lively present.
Rhodes is known as the ‘Sun
Island’ or ‘Island of light’ as there are hardly any days when the sun doesn't
shine. With its subtropical climate and over 3,000 hours of sun per year you
can be guaranteed a good tan on your holiday.
The town of Rhodes with
its picturesque walled old city is situated on the northern point of the island.
In ancient times the harbour here was guarded by the legendary Colossus of
Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, but now it has been replaced by statues
of deer. Nevertheless the old part of the city has plenty of wonders still to
offer and the modern part of the town is just as vibrant.
The rest of the island
offers miles of beaches, interesting archaeological sites and natural beauty
spots. The best beaches are on the east coast, between Faliraki and Lindos.
Lindos is renowned as a particularly picturesque town that has been designated
a protected historic settlement. The island provides holidaymakers with a vast
array of
all year round leisure alternatives as well as
an excellent tourist infrastructure offering a wide variety of entertainment
and day trips to neighbouring islands like Kos, Patmos, Karpathos, Kalymnos and
Leros.
The climate of Rhodes is a
mild Mediterranean climate characterised by sunny and dry summers and mild
winters. Refreshing breezes and winds are blowing during the months of July and
August, making the temperatures more bearable.
The average monthly temperatures are:

Rhodes is a wonderful place to be if you love to shop. There is something
for everyone in the vast array of shops gathered in the streets
of the New City of Rhodes and in the stone-paved alleyways of the Medieval Town.
In particular, the Old Town is the place to go for shopping. Many shops sell
classic and modern gold and silver jewellery as well as antique reproduction
jewellery. If you are looking for leather goods, Socrates Street (Odos
Socratous) is a great place to go.
Rhodes is
one of the most cosmopolitan of the Greek Islands. Rhodes Town can compete with
many European cities in stock of designer label goods. The variety of goods and
services is truly inexhaustible and will attract even the most demanding buyer.
The supermarkets
that you'll find in all villages normally stock everything you need plus lots
of products, you know from back home.
A local quality
local product is embroidered linen and crochet work and you can find bargain
table clothes and suchlike. Miscellaneous good buys are olive oil, olives,
ouzo, Turkish delight and sponges. For a real treat head for the colourful
folklore bazaar which is located in the Old Town. Rhodes is also famous for its
umbrellas which are very reasonably priced.
If you want a great
nightlife then Rhodes is the place to be. There is something for everyone. Most
of the nightlife and the wildest partying goes on in Rhodes town, the new town,
Lindos, and Faliraki. But there are also many nice places in the quieter parts.
Six cinemas are available in Rhodes
City and play a wide range of films. If you prefer a gamble, The Casino of
Rhodes is housed in the Grand Hotel Summer Palace, in the heart of the city. A
great variety of modern and romantic bars, atmospheric piano-restaurants,
lively nightclubs and places playing Greek music are available in Rhodes.
The most lively and famous clubs of
Rhodes are Amazone, Loft, La Scala, Versus, Alaloum and Laser. The most popular
and lively bars of the island are Roloi, Veggera, Allegria, Blue Lagoon, Sticky
Fingers and Juke Box.
