Welcome to Vienna

The charming capital of Austria has classical music theaters, Old World coffeehouses and palaces, a historic zoo and modern nightclubs and galleries.

Sitting on the bank of the Daube and once the centre of the Hapsburg Empire, Vienna continues to bask in the grand imperial spirit in the form of its magnificent palaces and grand mansions. Today it is also probably best known for being the backdrop of one of the most famous films of modern times – The Third Man.

Its cultural heritage is mainly musical with great composers such as Strauss, Brahms, Beethoven, Schubert, Haydn and Mozart all having lived and performed here. Today this tradition is kept alive through the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the State Opera House.

Vienna is also synonymous with gourmet fare, cream cakes, superb coffee, the Vienna Boys' Choir and the Lippizaner stallions at the world-famous Spanish Riding School making it an ideal city break for the whole family.

The city is divided up into 23 districts and most of the tourist attractions are found within the mainly pedestrianised inner city area. The city walls that once enclosed this area have been replaced by the Ringstrasse, a wide ring road. If you venture further out into the suburbs you’ll find the Prater amusement park with its massive ferris wheel, and the magnificent Schonbrunn Palace. Of course you must ensure you visit Vienna Woods, home to the ancient 'heuringen' (wine taverns).

Weather

Vienna has a temperate continental climate, with warm, sunny summers and cold winters. Thunderstorms occur in the summer and snowfall is common in winter. Spring, autumn and the beginning of summer are the best times to travel to Vienna.

Shopping

Shopping

Vienna may not be a vast city but it does provide some wonderful premium shopping. The main areas are the Kärnterstrasse and Garben where you will find large brand name boutiques, quality jewellery and crystal. For more moderately priced retail clothing, head for Mariahilferstrasse.

In the outer districts of the city are three shopping malls offering numerous shops all under one roof – Shopping City Süd, Shopping City Nord and Donauzentrum.

If you enjoy browsing markets with the locals why not head for the Naschmarkt (vibrant and eclectic), Heiligenkreuzerhof (art) and the flea market, Flohmarkt.

Some specialities to look out for are Sacher Torte, Loden (traditional woollen coats), Petit-point, Lobmeyer Crystal, Augarten (hand-painted porcelain) and antiques.

The tap water in Vienna is safe to drink. Medical care is very good and is widely available but you are advised to ensure you have sufficient travel insurance in place.

Vienna is one of the safest cities in the world and has a very low crime rate. However you would be well advised to take the usual precautions with your valuables when in crowded areas. Also secure any documents or valuables in your hotel safe and do not carry large amounts of cash with you.
