On a single island you can experience some of Australia's most memorable nature, wildlife, wine and seafood.
Kangaroo Island is one of Australia’s
great treasures. With a population of just 4,400 people, the island is a
wonderful mix of soaring cliffs, dense forest, towering sand dunes, wetlands, white
beaches and haven for Australia’s native wildlife.
It is the third largest of Australia’s
islands (after Tasmania and Melville Island) situated 110km (70 miles) south
west of Adelaide and is easily reached by ferry or plane.
Kangaroo Island produces some of Australia's
finest gourmet foods such as freshly caught King George Whiting, sheep's cheese,
marron, the unique Ligurian honey and an exciting range of wines.
Its rugged coastline shelters beaches
edged with stunning blue seas, while the interior contains native forest and
bush, 30% of which is maintained as conservation or national parks. Flinders
Chase National Park is a highlight, with wildlife galore, forests and dramatic
coastal scenery.
It is an incredible place where you can
see pelicans wheeling through the sky, sea lions lying on the sand of Seal
Bay and sleepy koalas in the eucalyptus trees. If you want to experience the
wild side of Australia then this is the island for you. However you will need
more than just a couple of days to explore everything the island has to offer.
The winters on Kangaroo Island are between
June and September and are mild and wet. The summers are normally warm and dry.
Tempered by the ocean, particularly on the coastline, maximum temperatures in
summer rarely exceed 35°C. Most of the islands rainfall occurs between May and
September.
The average monthly temperatures are:

Most visitors
don’t come to Kangaroo Island for the shopping. However for souvenirs, wine,
arts and crafts and the unique Ligurian honey, you will find stores and outlets
at most of the visitor centres on the island. For example, Flinders Chase
National Park Visitor Centre, Dudley Cellar Door (wine) and Emu Ridge
Eucalyptus and Craft Gallery.
Kangaroo Island is not the place to go if you are looking for raucous nightlife as there are no nightclubs. The main entertainment on the Island comes in the form of Island tours, watching the wildlife, visiting the wineries and horse racing. The closest you will get to a club is the local pub or your hotel bar
